Cancer and Your Emotional Wellbeing
In February 2007 I was diagnosed with cancer and that
started me on a journey that has changed my life. I would like
to share it with you.
Being told that you have cancer is devastating and was
compounded for me by being a few weeks pregnant at the time. It
really confronts you with your own mortality.
Having put an operation, chemotherapy, giving birth and 8
months of treatment behind me, I was left to rebuild my life as
best I could. It was difficult. I felt broken, tired, scared,
angry, frustrated, and as though I were buried alive.
My emergence from this self imposed coffin has taken a lot
of learning and having to face a lot of demons. Fortunately I
discovered the power of neuro-linguistic-programming (NLP). NLP
is the study of human excellence and achievement and has
created massive shifts in my consciousness. I use NLP every day
to help myself and others live better lives. I have
broken free of the chains that a diagnosis of cancer imposed on
me and I want to help you to do the same.
Why Your Emotional Wellbeing Is So Important
There have been many books written and a lot of research has
been conducted into the theory that our physical wellbeing is
dependant on our emotional wellbeing. The culmination of my
journey is based on this research.
Our bodies are made up of billions of cells. These cells
hold our genetic code and know their function within our body.
When a cell has its information repeatedly damaged, it can
loose track of its purpose and start dividing randomly. This
may be called a cancer cell which the body normally ‘recycles’
through the lymphatic system. However, if the immune response
is impaired, this process is inhibited.
So our work involves enhancing immune response in two ways.
The first is by changing the person's general state of mind and
attitude to life events.
Research indicates that bereavement and experimentally
induced negative mood states inhibit the body's lymphocyte
production, so negative mood states can increase the risk of
cancer.
We also promote immune function by directly "instructing"
the lymphocytes to do their job more effectively. This is
achieved using guided imagery.
Research tells us that people diagnosed with cancer that are
taught relaxation and guided imagery show significantly higher
T cell activity than controls.
Based around current research, we have developed a 6 step
cancer programme to help you: Let go of the fear, guilt
and anger. Regain a sense of self and Re-engage with life.
This powerful program will rapidly address your emotional
wellbeing (change comes from within!) so that you are able to
deal with your illness in a powerful and positive way.
The 6 Session Schedule involves: A journey of self
discovery, Working with the immune system and diet, Dealing
with Emotion, Learning skills to cope and Goal setting.
In each session we will practice visualisations and discuss
any issues that are affecting you personally. The programme has
been devised specifically to:
- Create a sense of mission,
- Set future goals aligned with that mission,
- Heal grief and depression,
- Let go of resentment and anger,
- Learn skills to express emotion effectively,
- Resolve internal and external conflicts and,
- Develop a proactive coping style.
One important lesson I have learned is that you CANNOT hide
from yourself. The existence of cancer is a message from your
immune system, telling you that you need to let go of certain
stressful emotions, resolve internal conflicts, and create a
life worth living.
